Lukashenko upholds proposal to establish holiday celebrating Belarusian students

MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – At the meeting with students on 29 January, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko upheld an initiative to establish a new holiday for Belarusian students, BelTA has learned.

During the meeting, student of the Faculty of Journalism Maksim Tyutenkov suggested establishing a new holiday in Belarus - the Day of Belarusian Students. He recalled that 17 November is observed in Russia as International Day of Student Solidarity and 25 January is known as Tatiana's Day or Students' Day. However, the young man believes that it is necessary to establish a national student holiday and suggested 25 February to observe it, as on this day in 1919 a decree was passed to set up a state-run university in Minsk.

The head of state liked this initiative and invited the young man to take part in the formalization of this proposal. “A decision is made, put together a team, go ahead and do it,” the head of state responded.

“Take your time, but do not put it off. This is a very good initiative. We will implement it by summer,” the president said.
