MOSCOW, 13 March (BelTA) - The Ukrainians should have ceased fire and sat down at the negotiating table a long time ago, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a press conference after the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on 13 March, BelTA learned.
He recalled that at the very beginning of the conflict he had called for negotiations rather than a war. Among other things, he spoke about it with Vladimir Zelensky, whom he warned him about the responsibility for the war on the territory of Ukraine. “I told him something then: ‘Remember (this is the classics of history): when the United States has a new president tomorrow, what will you do? Look, I was right, wasn’t I?” the president stated.
The head of state noted that he always tells Western politicians that it was they who pushed “this inexperienced guy” for war.
“Belarus and the Russian Federation have had the uniform position, both in the past and now. We strictly honored all agreements, including on Ukraine, before our allies and friends. We will adhere to this position now,” the head of state said. “It was not Russia or Belarus that was the main reasons for what is happening there.”
“The Ukrainians should have ceased all fire and sat down at the negotiating table a long time ago,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.

“Although it all started with Poroshenko [ex-President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko]. After the Minsk agreements were signed, he had all the cards in his hands. He had all the trump cards to end the conflict. Nothing would have happened if he did. We would have reached an agreement on Donbass. I'm sure Donbass would have remained part of Ukraine,” the Belarusian leader noted.
Aleksandr Lukashenko said that in this situation, when everybody wiped the floor with Zelensky, in the White House too, he should think hard and choose negotiations within the framework of the three Slavic nations. “Look: nobody [in the West] will help Ukraine. Did the United States talk about rare earths at the beginning of the war? No. But now they do. They will take black soil and rare-earth minerals, and God willing they do not take away everything else. That's why he [Zelensky] will come back here. If not him, then a new president. He will rely on our internal forces,” the president said.
“Someone wants us to kill each other. We understand this. The other side doesn't. So let them think. We are in our right,” the Belarusian leader added.
