Lukashenko to discuss with Putin second NPP in Belarus

MINSK, 21 January (BelTA) – I am going to discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Belarus, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with the labor collectives of Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ trademark) and other enterprises of the MAZ holding company on 21 January, BelTA has learned.

“Nowadays, we have a small excess of electricity. But it may not be enough in the future. Therefore, we will soon discuss with the Russian president the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Belarus,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

According to the Belarusian leader, the site for the plant has not been chosen yet, but there are some options. “We will build either additional facilities in Ostrovets or a new plant at the other internationally recognized site south of Mogilev,” the head of state explained. "There is no such thing as an excess of electricity: we will consume all available electricity."

The president recalled that Belarus is rapidly building all electric home and developing electric transportation. “If we build the second plant, we will fully provide people with both transportation and housing. Therefore, we will focus on this,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
