Lukashenko talks about mediation efforts in U.S.-Venezuela conflict

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – Answering questions after his Address to the Belarusian people and Parliament on 18 December, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke about the negotiations regarding the conflict situation between the USA and Venezuela, BelTA has learned.
“You probably noticed that I had conversations, negotiations with the ambassador whom [Venezuelan President Nicolas] Maduro recommended to me. Frankly, I tried through this ambassador to convey this position to Maduro. The Venezuelan leadership accepted all my proposals. I asked them to convey to Trump that it should be negotiated,” the head of state said.
“Enough war. One must understand that your children, your people, your loved ones and family could die in this war. That is my position,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.

The president recounted that the USA representatives raised the issue regarding Venezuela, considering Aleksandr Lukashenko’s friendly relations with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. They agreed not to publicize the details. Nevertheless, the president shared the essence of his stance.

“I gave them a clear example: ‘Do you want a second Vietnam?’” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

The president pointed out that many people died during the U.S. war in Vietnam, but now the USA, on the contrary, is going there with investments, and Vietnam is a fast-growing economy in Asia.

“Regarding the Venezuelans. Even if the Americans, for example, want to get the oil there. Well, they are right to want it. They can be understood. Because the USA, back then, built processing capacity for Venezuelan oil. It’s like jelly; it’s practically not liquid. So only the Americans could process it there. The Americans have such facilities right next door, just over the fence. That’s why they are looking that way. Currently, these facilities are practically not operating, billions of U.S. dollars [in losses],” the head of state noted. “Why bomb? Venezuelan oil can always be supplied to the premium American market and processed. So why bomb?! War means you have to send soldiers. And that means death. Those coffins will go back to the USA. Otherwise, you cannot defeat the country.”

Moreover, the Belarusian head of state indicated that should the USA launch military aggression, Nicolas Maduro would instead unify the vast majority of the population behind him, and they would fight.

A war would also generally pose threats to the entire region. “Anything could happen once a war starts. It won’t proceed like a train on tracks. These zigzags will begin. It’s unknown who will get hit. And then there’s huge Brazil. They have also taken a pro-Venezuelan position. Is it really necessary to inflame all of Latin America now? It’s obvious that before the USA tries to ‘impose order’ or ‘wage war’ over Taiwan, it should deal with the situation on its own doorstep. But not by means of war. That is my stance,” stated the Belarusian leader.
