MINSK, 29 August (BelTA) – The Shanghai Cooperation Organization needs to create its own currency for international settlements, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in an interview with China Media Group, BelTA has learned.
“During one of our sessions, I expressed my concern that we are progressing too slowly. I argued that it is long past time we established our own currency for international settlements – whether that be the yuan or another shared currency. Yet, it often feels we will not make meaningful progress until external pressures compel us to do so. That was the general thrust of my remarks,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The president acknowledged that while his proposal may not have garnered support from international colleagues, it was heard. He observed that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is characterized by its thorough and measured development, adding, “Perhaps we need to learn to develop in the Chinese way – calmly and confidently. That is the path we will follow moving forward.”
When asked about his expectations for the upcoming SCO summit in Tianjin, the Belarusian leader stressed that there was “no emergency”, anticipating a routine meeting to discuss pressing issues with his counterparts.
“For us, securing an agreement on even a single issue with other leaders would be a significant achievement. We are not a global power, nor do we aspire to be. It is enough for us to adopt the Chinese approach: to advance steadily, step by step. This is the path to our stable development,” Aleksandr Lukashenko concluded.
