MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko unveiled new details of his telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump as he answered journalists’ questions in Minsk on 22 August, BelTA has learned.
According to media reports, the leaders discussed not only bilateral relations between Belarus and the United States, but also the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and cooperation with Russia.
The head of state remarked that the call was interrupted after a fairly short time. Donald Trump then called back. “I said: ‘Donald, some enemies have interfered in our conversation’,” the president noted, emphasizing that the dialogue between the two leaders resumed with this joke. “He said: ‘It was probably Vladimir [Putin]’. I replied: ‘There is no one else it could be. But Donald, he is not that kind of person, he would not interfere in our conversation.’ He said: ‘Of course, I am joking’. I said: ‘Don’t try to justify it. I will tell him that you consider him to be an enemy’. That was how the conversation resumed.”
The discussion also touched upon the talks in Alaska, which were to take place shortly thereafter, and also the visits by U.S. representatives to Minsk and their talks with Aleksandr Lukashenko. In this context, the possibility of pardoning and releasing certain convicts was briefly mentioned.
The Belarusian president also congratulated his counterpart on the successful resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan: “This is a major achievement. I told him: ‘Well done for bringing them to the negotiating table. You and the Armenians and Azerbaijanis have signed such an important agreement [regarding the Zangezur corridor]. It is a significant development,’” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “No one will be able to oppose it. It is a peace agreement.”

Naturally, one of the priority topics was the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, and the head of state presented to the U.S. president his vision of a possible peace plan in detail.
