Lukashenko recalls 2020 events, warns against complacency

MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko demands that no complacency be allowed in any area as he heard the government’s 2025 report on 17 February, BelTA has learned.
“I often say: you have forgotten 2020! And if you think that 2020 was just about some external enemies… No, if our internal situation had not been what it was, no enemies would have ever got in here. And if they had, we would have stopped them in the first days. But our complacency… I observe it still, everywhere,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.

“When it comes to the budget, when it comes to the state, there is no result. Let’s agree: we are the masters on this land, and I will judge your work like a master,” the head of state noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko cited several examples where he sees complacency. “Mass media come to the forefront. You know my attitude towards the media. The war is being waged on the media front. I have been watching the new channel, Belarus 1,2,3 and others... As for the new news channel, a week goes by, and the news is a week old. For example, this morning I saw: Trump still hasn’t decided what to do about Iran. Come on, guys, he said that a week ago. Is that really the top news?” he said.
“And it’s like this everywhere. This stagnation, this irresponsibility of people,” Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.

The head of state noted that even with the display of materials about the Year of Belarusian Women on city streets, he had to make a remark.

“Is this how you will continue to live? The president sees something somewhere, so he reprimands you. If he doesn’t do so – everything is fine then,” the head of state said.

Another example: the state of suburban roads. They cleared the snow but left it piled up on the shoulders. “I was in the car and saw: they cleared the snow, just shoved it left and right. Then there was a little rain, and you have got a solid ice wall. Then, the rains will come, a thaw, and you will get water sitting on the roads. We will ruin all of them,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “Couldn’t they have pushed the snow not onto the shoulder, but over there onto the slope, so that the water would drain all spring when the snow melts? Don’t our road workers know that? Or don’t we have a deputy prime minister in charge of this?”

The president also drew attention to the untimeliness of certain work, which he personally saw on his way to the military training ground near Borisov. “They have dug up Zhodino. It’s also a show, because the president is going to pass through. They are hauling pipes, pulling some cables and so on. I think: guys, couldn’t you have finished this in October-November? Why are you dragging people (today it’s freezing, tomorrow it’s raining) through this mud and putting on some kind of show?” he added.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also recalled the issue of saving on street lighting, on which he had previously given instructions. “10 minutes here, 10 minutes there. That little saving adds up to half the pension increase. This is money, money is everywhere. We just don’t account for it. Why bother? It’s the budget... If someone wants to show off, let them shine, turn on their own lights, but pay for it.”
