Lukashenko on situation with Latvian embassy: Belarus has done what sovereign states do

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – Belarus has done what sovereign states do when the country made a decision to expel the employees of the Latvian embassy, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with parliamentarians, members of the Constitutional Commission and representatives of public administration bodies on 26 May, BelTA informs.

“In the situation with the Latvian embassy and the expulsion of the diplomatic mission Belarus has done what a sovereign nation-state having the right to act like that does,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

These days the Latvian capital of Riga is hosting the IIHF World Championships and has the flags of the participating countries raised in the city center. A few days ago Mayor of Riga Martins Stakis and Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics replaced the Belarusian state flag with the white-red-white flag.

After that the Latvian ambassador was summoned to the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ambassador, the diplomatic and administrative staff of the embassy were asked to leave Belarus.
