Lukashenko off to Kyrgyzstan for CSTO summit

MINSK, 27 November (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko is heading to Kyrgyzstan on a working visit to attend a session of the Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) on 27-28 November. The plane with the Belarusian head of state onboard has departed Minsk National Airport, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko will lay out Belarus' vision of strengthening international and regional security and its various segments. A number of documents are to be signed at the session of the Collective Security Council on 28 November. The summit will start with a narrow-participation session to be followed by a plenary session that will be attended by heads of the foreign ministries, defense ministries and security councils of the member states. The parties are set to sign a number of documents following the session of the Collective Security Council. On the sidelines of the summit, the Belarusian head of state will hold meetings and talks with his foreign counterparts.

According to the CSTO website, the summit will discuss international and regional security, the issues of strengthening the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border, and the work with the UN on the implementation of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. The agenda also includes the items related to coordination of the foreign policy activities of the CSTO member states, development of the organization's military capabilities and the improvement of mechanisms to counter challenges and threats, including in the field of information security. The heads of state will also review the events to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

A joint meeting of the CSTO Ministerial Council, the Defense Ministers Council and the Committee of Secretaries of the Security Councils is scheduled for 27 November. The agenda will include around 20 issues, most of which will then be submitted for a session of the Collective Security Council.
