Lukashenko: No political party has ever been censored in Belarus, even Belarusian Popular Front

MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) -  No political party has ever been censored in Belarus, even the Belarusian Popular Front, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media as he cast his vote in the presidential election in Minsk on 26 January, BelTA has learned.

BBC’s Stephen Rosenberg asked the head of state about his attitude to the situation when even his rivals in the election spoke out in support of him. For example, the leader of the Communist Party.

"Stephen, this is a new experience for you. So, what do you suggest I rejoice or be sad about this?" the head of state quipped.

He explained that this is due to the policy that is pursued in the country. "This is the only country in the post-Soviet space that has never censored parties. Even the Belarusian Popular Front (BNF). Even Zenon Poznyak, whose views were completely different from mine. I congratulated him on his anniversary recently. And I admit that he is a true revolutionary," Aleksandr Lukashenko said. “If the policy that they pursued in the 1990s prevailed, we would have been at war with you a long time ago. But even they were safe from persecution. More so the Communists. Our current Communists stands for a policy of justice. This is our policy. Why are they going to vote against me?"
