MOZYR, 6 November (BelTA) – Belarus has reaped a good harvest this year despite challenging weather conditions, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during a working trip to Mozyr District on 6 November, BelTA has learned.

“We are true Slavs. When the pressure is on, that's when we are ready to move heaven and earth to accomplish our goals. This year has been a most challenging for agriculture. I don't remember such harsh years. There were frosts in spring. It was impossible to begin. The sowing campaign was shifted by two or three weeks. Naturally, the harvesting weeks were also shifted. Nevertheless, this year we are getting a record grain harvest. We have nearly 11 million tonnes. It's a great achievement if it is a tonne of grain per person. We have more than one tonne. Significantly more. This is a good harvest. My point is, when we were up against the wall, we did a great job,” the head of state said.

Upon his arrival, Aleksandr Lukashenko asked Gomel Oblast Governor Ivan Krupko about the situation in agriculture and the work still needed to be completed. “Overall, we will get 1.4 million tonnes of grain [including corn],” the governor reported.

The majority of farms have already virtually finished harvesting corn for grain. The region is engaged in corn grain crimping, and, as the head of state was assured, the technology is proving its worth. In particular, it saves time on grain drying and allows for an earlier start to the field harvest, without any loss of nutritional properties.

The discussion covered not only the corn harvest but also the removal of straw from the fields and approaches to developing pig farming.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also showed interest in personnel matters, inquiring about how officials are performing on the ground, in specific agricultural enterprises and districts.

A substantive talk also took place with Chairwoman of the Mozyr District Executive Committee Yelena Pavlechko. She reported that young people choose not to leave the district and that more housing is being constructed in the area.

“We need to finish the year strong, we need to work hard. This is a problem for the entire country, and especially for you. There are many abandoned, unplowed fields. I understand, this is Polesie, the Pripyat region, you can't get onto the land everywhere in the spring. But there are days and weeks when it is possible. Therefore, these fields must be plowed. Don't even expect any leniency. They must be put in order,” the president said.

He noted that the state spends significant funds on land reclamation, but at the same time, there are instances where land plots are neglected and become overgrown. “This should not happen,” the head of state said. “At the very least, sow grass. This is a critical issue for you. And for the entire country.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko also brought up the existing order to put unused household lands in villages back into use: “Some leave behind their land plots, half a hectare each. These lands need to be plowed. The land must be cherished. It is a scarce resource, especially in Polesie. A very scarce resource.”

Speaking about the program for the development of the Polesie lands, the head of state said that money would be allocated, but in a targeted manner, for specific areas. “Money will be given only for specific purposes. There will be no indiscriminate handouts of money,” he said.
