Lukashenko confronts governors over livestock deaths

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko once again raised the issue of livestock mortality during a meeting with senior members of the Council of Ministers, BelTA has learned.

Addressing the problem, the head of state pointed out that even in Grodno Oblast, which has one of the best agricultural performances in the country, the figures have risen sharply. “Almost a thousand more head were lost in January compared to the same period last year. I will hold you accountable,” the president warned Grodno Oblast Governor Yuri Karayev. He added that there are regions where the situation is even worse.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also singled out Mogilev Oblast. He had earlier received a report from the region’s governor, Anatoly Isachenko, which also touched upon livestock losses. “Isachenko says, ‘We’ll balance it out over the year.’ How can you balance anything when a thousand have already died? How do you balance that?” the Belarusian leader asked rhetorically. “Either you aren’t listening to me, or you’re tired of working.”
