MOSCOW, 26 September (BelTA) – Belarus can use the money saved from the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction loan to build another nuclear power plant unit, BelTA learned from Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko after negotiations with the Russian president in the Kremlin ended.
Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “We’ve saved a respectable sum. We can build an entire unit with money saved from the first loan.”
However, the final decision on where the additional nuclear facilities will be built has yet to be made. The head of state said: “I am personally in two minds over where we should build it. Either the third unit as part of the current nuclear power plant in Ostrovets. Or build it in the east. Specialists and the government suggest building the third unit nearby. It will be cheaper. On the other hand, when such a facility is built, it spurs the development of an entire region. This is why I feel slight hesitations. We can build it there or over there. I think we will make up our minds soon.”
Aleksandr Lukashenko said that the presidents had given the necessary instructions to the governments of the two countries. “They will work it out as Rosatom’s head told me yesterday. They will wrap up the details. If no insurmountable obstacles arise, we are going to build the third unit or a new nuclear power plant,” the president stated.
