Lukashenko: Economic disputes in the world can spiral into military confrontation

MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – Conflicts in the world will only be expanding, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said during an interview with the Interstate TV and Radio Company Mir, BelTA has learned.
The head of state was asked whether Belarus and Russia, as members of the Union State, take into account new threats stemming from the conflict in the Middle East, possible confrontation with Iran and other developments.

Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that Russia cannot disregard this. It has two military bases in Syria.
“Iran is an ally of Russia. It has not turned its back on it, it has helped and is helping the Russian Federation as much as it can. We are very interconnected economically. Take the tension between the USA and China – it is very serious, I would even say explosive. Thanks to the Chinese, it is somehow possible to keep a lid on it. That is why Russia cannot stand aside, and we are an ally of Russia. We have a common defense space,” the president remarked.

The head of state noted that Belarus also maintains close relations with Iran and the Middle East. “I have very, very good relations with Muslim countries. They have respected me since a very long time ago,” he said.

“We take all these conflicts into account. We see that these conflicts are getting worse. And the situation will be getting worse because of unresolved diplomatic, political and economic wars and contradictions. Today a trade, economic war is going on. It is clear that (God forbid, of course) it can spiral into a military confrontation. Take the Houthis, for example. Much of the global trade passes through the Suez Canal. There you go. The flight that started there affected global trade. Everything is interconnected. Therefore, we cannot ignore this,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.
