Ryzhenkov reflects on importance of CIS summit in Dushanbe

DUSHANBE, 9 October (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov reflected on specific features and significance of the upcoming CIS summit in Dushanbe during a press briefing, BelTA reports.

“The summit’s importance extends beyond its role as a negotiation platform for like-minded people, the leaders of CIS nations. These are leaders who, under similar circumstances, are forging their countries’ independence and, as a result, are fostering wide-ranging cooperation within this international organization,” said Maksim Ryzhenkov.

He reflected that the Commonwealth, founded nearly 35 years ago, has matured into a serious international organization but continues to evolve. This development is evidenced by the summit’s agenda, which will include discussions on expanding opportunities for new members and defining the status of other states within the CIS framework.

“Further decisions will be made on a more serious international positioning of the CIS. Issues of cooperation with other regional organizations and granting observer status to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will be discussed,” Maksim Ryzhenkov said.
Another key topic for the summit is the CIS Plus format. The foreign minister explained that this initiative reflects a growing need to build more comprehensive and closer relations, particularly in a regional context. “Countries interested in our region naturally want to be informed about what’s happening in our organization and participate in decision-making,” he said.

Maksim Ryzhenkov added that such summits also provide an excellent opportunity for leaders to meet on the sidelines and discuss bilateral issues.

As previously reported, the meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council will be held in Dushanbe on 10 October. Approximately two dozen items are on the agenda for the leaders’ consideration. Ahead of the organization’s 35th anniversary next year, a number of initiatives to strengthen its global standing are planned, including the establishment of the CIS Plus format and granting observer status to the SCO within the Commonwealth.
