Russian ambassador: Interregional ties play a special role in Belarus-Russia relations

MINSK, 10 September (BelTA) – Interregional ties play a special role in the Belarus-Russia relations, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev told journalists after he met with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 10 September, BelTA has learned.

The ambassador stressed that the discussion focused on the upcoming Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia due in Minsk and Minsk Oblast at the end of September.

“A meeting with the head of state is always a huge responsibility. I had a chance to get reassurance about the intent of the Belarusian leadership to expand all types of relations that were established between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus in the past decades,” Dmitry Mezentsev noted. “They include ties between manufacturers, including producers of agricultural products. Interregional ties play a special role in the relations. I was happy to hear this from Aleksandr Lukashenko in the run-up to the Forum of Regions,” he added.

The upcoming forum will follow in the footsteps of the last year's meetings in Saint Petersburg, Dmitry Mezentsev said. He pointed out that both the countries are busy gearing up for the forum and dealing with matters on the current agenda. “We would like to focus on invigorating cooperation between the twin towns of the two countries,” the ambassador stated.

“Aleksandr Lukashenko recently said that for Belarusians the common Fatherland stretches from the western border of Brest Oblast to Vladivostok, Kamchatka, Sakhalin. This perception of the common Fatherland is important. It can also help strengthen economic ties and support technological chains of enterprises of the two countries,” Dmitry Mezentsev stressed.
