Opinion: Sanctions are an attempt to hold back those who disagree with the hegemony of the West

MINSK, 30 June (BelTA) – Sanctions represent an attempt to hold back those who disagree with the hegemony of the West. Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov made the statement at an offsite session of the International Cooperation and Support for Compatriots Abroad Commission of the General Council of the political party United Russia, BelTA has learned. The session took place in the Minsk branch of the Russian State Social University.

Sergey Lavrov said: “The world is experiencing an increasingly stronger fever. After the launch of the Russian special military operation, the collective West spearheaded by the USA started systemic pressure on Russia.”

In his words, the special military operation is not the reason behind Western sanctions against Russia. The official pointed out that the USA has been using Ukraine as a pawn in its anti-Russian game for many years.

The diplomat stressed that the West is trying to force the international community to accept a unipolar model of the neo-colonial world and make countries simply obey the will of the select few. Sergey Lavrov remarked that the West is trying to hold back those, who disagree with the idea of mandatory hegemony, including Russia and Belarus, with the help of various underhanded geopolitical methods starting with interference in domestic affairs and ending with sanctions and demonization in the international space.
