MINSK, 11 December (BelTA) - Moscow and Washington have reached an understanding that Ukraine must return to a neutral, non-nuclear, and non-aligned status, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during an embassy roundtable on Ukraine settlement, TASS reports.

According to him, mutual understandings were reached in Alaska: Ukraine must return to the non-aligned, neutral, and non-nuclear foundations of its statehood. “It was precisely these principles - non-alignment, neutrality, and a non-nuclear status - that were enshrined in the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine of 16 July 1990,” he recalled.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that Russian leader Vladimir Putin and U.S. President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, during a recent meeting in the Kremlin, settled all misunderstandings between Moscow and Washington that had arisen due to the pause following the summit in Alaska. According to him, following the meeting, the parties reaffirmed the mutual understandings reached in Alaska. “This is a very, very important result because there was a certain pause after Anchorage. In terms of our negotiations with the Americans on the Ukrainian issue, I believe that all misunderstandings and misapprehensions have been resolved,” he said.

Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Russia has the political will for peace. “The president [of Russia, Vladimir Putin] constantly speaks of readiness to continue substantive dialogue, primarily with the American side, as it is the one demonstrating a serious commitment to achieving results. We truly want to end the conflict,” the head of Russian diplomacy said, adding that the Russian side still prefers resolving the crisis through negotiations. “We have not refused from negotiations, which is confirmed by constructive work on considering the initiatives from the United States,” he noted.

Sergey Lavrov pointed out that the negotiations between Russia and the United States are dedicated to finding a long-term settlement in Ukraine. Simultaneously, the minister drew attention to attempts by the UK, France, and Germany to disrupt this process and expressed doubts regarding Europe's usefulness in the negotiations.

Speaking about the situation on the front, Sergey Lavrov stated that the Ukrainian army casualties have exceeded one million and are still mounting. Russia has already handed over 11,000 bodies of Ukrainian military personnel to Ukraine, receiving 201 bodies of its own soldiers in return.
