MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) - Syria is a reliable friend and partner in the Middle East for Belarus, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova said as she met with Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh in Minsk on 30 October, BelTA has learned.
“Syria is a reliable friend and partner in the Middle East for Belarus. Cooperation between our countries have been steadily developing thanks to the good relations between the presidents of our countries,” Natalya Kochanova said. “We praise our interaction at the United Nations and other international platforms. We share similar approaches to the policies pursued in our countries. In foreign policy this is sovereignty, independence, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, territorial integrity. We are grateful to you for supporting our country on many sensitive issues in international organizations. Just as we have always supported Syria and the Syrian people in their aspirations to live in their own land, in the issues of world order, territorial integrity and sanctions pressure, which both your country and ours have experienced to the fullest extent.”
Belarus was closely following the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the speaker said. “It is horrible to see civilians, children dying. For our part, we have repeatedly adopted statements, which were sent to all international organizations, on the need to stop escalation in the Middle East and resolve the conflict peacefully. We understand that it is not easy to do. Our President Aleksandr Lukashenko said so at the BRICS summit, but this is the only right way to resolve the conflict,” the chairperson of the Council of the Republic said.
The Belarusian people, more than anyone else, understand the importance of peace on earth. “This year we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the liberation of our country from Nazi invaders. Next year we will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. The Belarusian people suffered a lot. We know what war is, that is why we have adopted laws on the genocide of the Belarusian people and the inadmissibility of the rehabilitation of Nazism. We will always support peace-loving aspirations of any country. We sincerely wish peace and tranquility to the Middle East,” Natalya Kochanova added.
