FM: Belarus, Algeria hold similar views on European ‘democracy’

ALGIERS, 2 December (BelTA) – Belarus and Algeria have much in common in terms of their historical development and share similar views on the international agenda, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov told journalists in Algeria on 2 December, BelTA has learned.

“This is a like-minded state. In fact, we share similar views on the international agenda. This applies to all matters: upholding the UN Charter, working towards a more just multipolar world order, and ensuring the peaceful settlement of issues on the international agenda,” the foreign minister said.

According to Maxim Ryzhenkov, the issues of European countries’ responsibility for colonialism and genocide also serve as a connecting link in the policies of Belarus and Algeria.

He mentioned that during his stay in Algeria, he had the opportunity to visit a local museum, where he learned a lot about the struggle of the Algerian people for their independence. Moreover, this happened after the Second World War. “It was not so long ago. It occurred even later than the genocide Germany perpetrated against the Soviet and Belarusian people. During the Algerian war for independence, French authorities were responsible for what amounted to the genocide of approximately 1.5 million people. This deep wound is felt in the Algerian society to this day,” the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs noted.

“This is similar to our view of the so-called European democracy, which attempted to impose ‘democracy’ on countries such as Belarus and Algeria by these very means. That is why we understand development issues very well and know exactly what would await us in ‘civilized’ Europe. We understand very well that we can develop only by relying on our own internal strength. And for our development, we must consolidate the nation and maintain full control over the internal development: social, economic and political. In this we are similar to Algeria,” Maxim Ryzhenkov stated.
