MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ international initiatives seek to unite nations and foster dialogue, Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Sekreta said at an event marking the International Day of Living Together in Peace, which took place at Minsk’s House of Friendship on 28 January, BelTA has learned.

Igor Sekreta pointed out that although the International Day of Living Together in Peace was established less than a year ago, the principle of peaceful coexistence among states with different political, social and economic systems was first proclaimed by People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs of the USSR Georgy Chicherin during the Genoa Conference back in 1922.
“The deep crisis in international relations, the escalation of existing conflicts, and the acceleration of the arms race both regionally and globally lead to heightened international tensions and the emergence of new hotspots, threatening the preservation of peace in general. Current events show that peace cannot be taken for granted. It requires active maintenance and efforts to sustain it. After all, without peace there is no development, and without development there is no peace. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke about this back in 2005 during the UN Summit in New York,” Igor Sekreta emphasized.

“Guided by this, Belarus conducts its policy in the spirit of peaceful creation, remaining an island of security and stability,” the deputy foreign minister continued. “Two devastating wars have shaped a rejection of war and violence, and a striving for peace and good-neighborly relations in every Belarusian. This is precisely why all of Belarus’ initiatives at international forums seek to unite and foster dialogue, restoring trust, reducing confrontation, and strengthening security.”

“This is precisely why Belarus has always sought to build good-neighborly relations with all countries and has never threatened anyone,” Igor Sekreta emphasized. “As far back as 1973, Belarus initiated a UN General Assembly resolution on the use of scientific and technological progress for the benefit of peace and social progress. Since 1979, the Belarusian side has been the author of the UN General Assembly resolution on prohibiting the development and manufacture of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons.”

“This year, we will once again submit the draft of this resolution to the UN,” the deputy foreign minister noted.

“A significant contribution by Belarus to global peace and security was President Aleksandr Lukashenko’s initiative to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central and Eastern Europe. The initiative was submitted for consideration by the world community at the 53rd session of the UN General Assembly, and in December 1998, the General Assembly adopted the corresponding resolution,” Igor Sekreta added.
