Belarusian MFA hails prospects for cooperation with Latin America

MINSK, 15 July (BelTA) - Despite the distance, Belarus views cooperation with Latin American countries as very promising, Belarusian First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lukashevich told the media, BelTA has learned.

Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko is currently on an official visit to Venezuela. Then he will go to Cuba and Nicaragua. The task of the government delegation is to further cooperation with geographically distant countries.

"We are in Venezuela to consolidate and update the agreements. We are ready to discuss ways of expanding trade and economic cooperation, political, cultural interaction. Prospects always depend on the efforts of both sides. We see that we are warmly welcomed and heard here. I am confident that important high-level meetings will bring the results we aim for," Sergei Lukashevich said.

He emphasized that the support of partner countries is very important, especially in the current difficult times. "The club of chosen countries, which we see on the international stage, is  cracking at the seams. In our opinion, it should be replaced by a fairer world order, where no one imposes their point of view on each other. Together with friendly countries, we are working on the international agenda, setting certain goals and achieving them. Latin American countries have supported us, we have supported a number of their initiatives. All this shows that despite the distance, cooperation has a good future," Sergei Lukashevich said.

During the visit of the Belarusian government delegation to Venezuela, the focus is on cooperation in manufacturing sector. "We ran a number of projects with Venezuela to assemble machinery. Now it's time to decide what to do with these projects next, what path to follow in terms of deepening cooperation to the benefit of both Belarus and Venezuela. We want to come to a common denominator and results, primarily economic ones, because our political relations are very good," Sergei Lukashevich said.

He dwelt separately on cooperation with Nicaragua. "Belarusian specialists worked there in the Soviet times. The relations took shape back then. Today we are rediscovering Nicaragua. We are putting economic cooperation on the basis of good political interaction. We have already made sure this is the right strategy. We are beginning to convert political friendship into economic results. In terms of cooperation with Nicaragua, we are now confidently moving forward, by seven-mile steps, which cannot but please us. We are optimistic about the development of our cooperation," Sergei Lukashevich stated.
