Belarusian FM calls UN attention to inadmissibility of economic sanctions

MINSK, 3 July (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei delivered a video address at a high-level meeting on middle-income countries of the UN General Assembly on 2 July, BelTA has learned.

"In his speech, Vladimir Makei noted the urgency of adopting a comprehensive long-term UN strategy for the sustainable development of middle-income countries. As a positive example of a systematic approach, the minister cited a strategic framework for cooperation with middle-income countries of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization," the press service said.

Vladimir Makei stressed the importance of providing systemic support on the part of the UN, international financial institutions and regional organizations which should take into account the multifaceted nature of the development of middle-income countries and national needs. He also drew attention to the inadmissibility of imposing unilateral measures of economic development and using economic sanctions.

Vladimir Makei suggested the UN General Assembly hold regular meetings on middle-income countries.

It was Belarus' initiative to convene high-level events on middle-income countries. That was the second time such an event was held at the UN.
