MINSK, 16 October (BelTA) – Chairman of the Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Aleinik met with President of the IPU, Speaker of the Parliament of Tanzania Tulia Ackson on the sidelines of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of parliament.
They discussed in detail cooperation between the Council of the Republic and the IPU and the Parliament of Tanzania.
Sergei Aleinik spoke highly of Tulia Ackson’s work as the IPU Chairperson, praised her open, bold and fair stance on a number of sensitive issues. He told her about Belarus' approaches to ensuring Eurasian security amid the current geopolitical crisis, as well as about Belarus’ progress to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
For her part, Tulia Ackson welcomed Belarus' participation in the 149th IPU Assembly, Belarus’ commitment to the values of the organization, and its significant contribution to ensuring Eurasian security. The IPU president acknowledged Belarus’ role in promoting peace and emphasized the importance of dialogue as an important tool of parliamentary diplomacy.
Speaking about cooperation between Belarus and Tanzania, the parliamentarians confirmed their plans to intensify inter-parliamentary dialogue, sign a memorandum of cooperation, and exchange expertise and knowledge in areas of mutual interest. They agreed to continue interaction on a wide range of issues.
On the sidelines of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Sergei Aleinik held bilateral meetings with heads of parliamentary delegations to discuss the work of the IPU Assembly, bilateral relations, and reach agreements on intensifying inter-parliamentary dialogue by means of setting up friendship groups and exchanging visits.
