MINSK, 9 October (BelTA) - A delegation from the Republic of Belarus is participating in the 222nd session of the UNESCO Executive Board, which is taking place in Paris on 1-16 October, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the plenary session on 7 October, Secretary-General of the National Commission of the Republic of Belarus for UNESCO Natalya Schasnovich recalled two important anniversaries being marked this year: the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Second World War and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. She emphasized the particular importance of preserving historical memory and the values of peace and international solidarity.

In her statement, the Belarusian representative stressed that in the light of global challenges and geopolitical instability, UNESCO’s mission is more relevant than ever. The organization must promote mutual understanding, counter the spread of hatred and confrontation, and support effective international cooperation.

Natalya Schasnovich also expressed concern over the preservation of the transboundary World Heritage Site Belovezhskaya Pushcha, citing the lack of information on whether the Polish side had carried out a full environmental assessment of the fortification infrastructure constructed within the site.

The Belarusian diplomat called for respect for the principles of the UN and UNESCO Charters: non‑interference in internal affairs of other countries and the inadmissibility of politicizing humanitarian cooperation.
