Landmarks of Belarus: Church of St. Joseph in Volozhin

Landmarks of Belarus: Church of St. Joseph in Volozhin The Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Volozhin is one of the striking examples of classicist architecture in Belarus. The new church building was constructed between 1806 and 1815 on the site of a former wooden church. Its exterior resembles an ancient temple. Beneath the choir loft was the family crypt of the Tyszkiewicz (also spelled as Tyshkevich) family. The founder of the church, Count Józef Tyszkiewicz was also buried there. In 1830, an exquisite gate-belfry was erected in front of the church, its arches housing three bronze bells. The Church of St. Joseph in Volozhin has been included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus.
