Kazakhstan may start building 2nd, 3rd NPP - President Tokayev

ASTANA, 3 January (BelTA - Kazinform) - In an interview with the Ana Tili newspaper President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev spoke on the possibility of such a scenario, Kazinform News Agency reports.

During the referendum on the nuclear power plant construction, you addressed mass media and said that foreign companies with the best technologies would be involved in the NPP construction. You said that an international consortium would be created. Is there an understanding in the Government what companies will be given preference to?

“This issue was discussed with Vladimir Putin during his visit to Astana. It was agreed that the Kazakh side, being the project customer, would act as a general operator in the consortium. The point at issue was possible participation of Rosatom, which has high competence and vast experience in building nuclear power plants abroad. Negotiations are also underway with a Chinese company, given China's considerable success in building civilian nuclear facilities. Other foreign corporations, including western ones, are also interested in it,” said the President.

According to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, tendering procedures will be held in 2025, after which the Government will make a final decision.

“I am convinced that Kazakhstan needs a high-capacity nuclear power plant. Moreover, I do not rule out that we will start building the second, and, possibly, the third NPP. The nuclear industry will give a strong impulse to the development of our economy, which is already experiencing energy deficit. I believe that Kazakhstan should turn into a country with developed nuclear energy. It has a great future,” the President stressed.

On October 6, Kazakhstan held a nationwide a referendum on a nuclear power plant construction. 71.12% of voters (5,561,937 people) voted for the NPP construction, while 26.13% (2,045,271 people) voted against. The voter's turnout reached 63.66% or 7,820,204 people.

Minister of Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev said that the participants of the Consortium for the Nuclear Power Plant Construction in Kazakhstan would be determined in the first half of 2025.
