MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – Belarus and Libya are ready to strengthen and intensively develop bilateral relations, Belarus’ Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich told journalists following the meeting between Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa Haftar, BelTA has learned.
Viktor Karankevich noted that the meeting reaffirmed the commitment to implementing agreements reached at the highest level. These concern economic, social and humanitarian areas. The meeting discussed the execution of contracts for the supply of Belarusian agricultural, road‑construction, utility, and quarry machinery.
One of the key topics is the establishment of a service center in Libya to provide high‑quality maintenance for all Belarusian machinery to be supplied there. “Some equipment is already operating [in Libya], for example, MTZ tractors and passenger vehicles. The meeting emphasized the need for further development in this area, possibly including the assembly production of trucks, passenger cars, and agricultural equipment,” Viktor Karankevich stressed.
He stated that the matter concerned not only the supply of machinery, but also the establishment of joint production facilities for long-term cooperation in agriculture and the manufacturing industry. "This will contribute to strengthening and further developing our bilateral relations," he said.
“The meeting also touched upon the creation and reorganization of agricultural production facilities with the transfer of Belarusian technologies and the supply of Belarusian equipment. This strengthens food security [in Libya],” he emphasized.
The deputy prime minister also highlighted the training of Libyan students in Belarusian institutions in areas such as healthcare, medicine, and agriculture.
Viktor Karankevich also focused on healthcare and noted the possibility of treating Libyan citizens in Belarus, sharing expertise in improving and organizing medical services, and supplying medical equipment and pharmaceuticals.
When asked about cooperation with African countries in general, he stressed that Belarus is ready to share modern technologies that are in demand on the African continent. “We are always open. We always build dialogue based on trust. We are ready to come as friends, with our technologies, to develop mutually beneficial cooperation,” Viktor Karankevich concluded.
