Gomel Oblast strengthens ties with Russian partners at SPIEF

MINSK, 21 June (BelTA) - A delegation from Belarus’ Gomel Oblast led by Governor Ivan Krupko discussed social and economic cooperation, plans for the near future, and new projects with partners from Russian regions at the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on 20 June, the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee told BelTA.

During a meeting between Ivan Krupko and Governor of Russia’s Omsk Oblast Vitaly Khotsenko, the focus was on developing mutually beneficial relations across all sectors. Particular interest was expressed in cooperation in industry, tourism, and humanitarian exchanges.

At the Siberian Federal District’s exhibition stand, Ivan Krupko and Vitaly Khotsenko signed an agreement between the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee and the Government of Omsk Oblast on international and foreign economic cooperation in trade, science and technology, social and humanitarian affairs, culture, and other areas.

“I am convinced that the development of our countries begins with the development of regions. Agreements between regions across all sectors allow both parties to focus on specific areas,” the Gomel Oblast governor emphasized during a media briefing.

According to him, an agreement was reached  to deepen cooperation with Omsk Oblast. Gomel Oblast manufactures equipment for milking parlors, milk storage, and transportation, while Omsk Oblast develops software to support it. The joint product is expected to be tested at one of the farms currently under construction in southeastern Belarus.

In addition to animal husbandry, Gomel Oblast and Omsk Oblast plan to cooperate in agricultural machinery manufacturing, Vitaly Khotsenko remarked.

“Today we agreed to cooperate between our management teams. Our region is an agro-industrial hub, with two multi-brand centers with Belarusian equipment. We will make use of Gomel Oblast’s expertise. For example, we will offer our farmers crawler tractors. That is exactly what is needed now, since our soils are waterlogged. Our agricultural workers like and benefit from Gomel-made equipment,” he said.

The Gomel Oblast delegation invited their Omsk partners to the economic forum due to be held in Gomel in September.

During a meeting with Governor of Russia’s Oryol Oblast Andrey Klychkov, Ivan Krupko emphasized that it is important to hold offline meetings to foster foreign economic and humanitarian cooperation between regions. The two governors discussed opportunities for cooperation in mechanical engineering, animal husbandry, and vegetable cultivation.

The Gomel Oblast governor also met with Governor of Russia’s Bryansk Oblast Alexander Bogomaz. The governors signed a memorandum of understanding between the Government of Bryansk Oblast and the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) is a key platform to address current challenges in the global economy and identify solutions that support sustainable development. Every year, it brings together a wide range of business leaders and experts to build cooperative ties and exchange best practices and expertise. This year’s forum included participants from 140 countries.
