
MINSK, 28 August (BelTA) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Azerbaijan Dmitry Pinevich has visited the town of Sheki, BelTA learned from Embassy of Belarus in Azerbaijan.
During the visit, the ambassador met with the head of the Sheki District administration Elkhan Usubov. They discussed a wide range of issues regarding the further development of Belarusian-Azerbaijani cooperation, including one between the sister regions of Belarus and Azerbaijan.
The Belarusian ambassador also visited the Azeripek silk production company and discussed prospects for cooperation with Belarusian light industry enterprises.
The town of Sheki is considered a true pearl of Azerbaijan. This small town at the foot of the Greater Caucasus Range, which played an important role in the history of the Silk Road, amazes with its stunning architecture. Even today, the marketplace in Sheki attracts traders and buyers from the entire region.
Furthermore, this Azerbaijani town has been known since the 15th century as a place of silk production – Sheki is called one of the sericulture centers in the region. It was here in 1861 that the first silk-spinning factory, one of the largest in the world, was built.
In 2022, at a meeting of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, sericulture and traditional production of silk for weaving were included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity from Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Türkiye, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
