Belarus’ sugar beet harvest exceeds 3m tonnes

MINSK, 15 October (BelTA) – Belarus has harvested more than 3 million tonnes of sugar beet from over 61% of area, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry.

“The harvest has yielded 3,075,000 tonnes of sugar beet. The yield is 40 centners per hectare higher than last year,” the press service said.

Some 616,000 tonnes of potatoes have already been harvested. Nationwide, 130,000 tonnes of open-field vegetables have been harvested. The total sown area exceeds 8,000 hectares, with 71% of it cropped now.

As of 15 October, some 9,613,000 tonnes of grain, including rapeseed and corn, were cropped in Belarus. The regional breakdown is the following: Minsk Oblast – 2.379 million tonnes, Brest Oblast – 1.881 million tonnes, Grodno Oblast – 1.870 million tonnes, Mogilev Oblast – 1.296 million tonnes, Gomel Oblast – 1.159 million tonnes, Vitebsk Oblast – 1.028 million tonnes.

Belarus has harvested 90% of areas planted to grain and leguminous crops, including corn, which makes up 2,076,000 hectares. Average grain yield is 4.9 centners per hectare higher than last year’s level. Some 683,000 tonnes of food grain have been delivered under the state procurement program, representing 98% of the target.

Sowing of winter cereal grains has been completed on 1.460 million hectares, which is 97% of the planned area. The regional progress is as follows: Brest Oblast has exceeded its target by 2%, Grodno Oblast, Minsk Oblast and Mogilev Oblast met 100% of the target, Gomel Oblast sowed winter cereal grains on 93% of the planned area, and Vitebsk Oblast on 87%.

Corn for silage and green fodder has been harvested from 73% of the area, which is 742,000 hectares. So far Belarus has 13.723 million tonnes of haylage (98% of the plan), 15.515 million tonnes of silage (75% of the plan) and 8.427 million tonnes of grass forage units (84% of the plan). Autumn ploughing has been carried out on 94,000 hectares, representing 7% of the target area of 1.432 million hectares.
