Belarus PM calls for making most of EAEU advantages for import substitution

CHOLPON-ATA, 26 August (BelTA) - It is necessary to use the advantages of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) for import substitution and industrial development, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan on 26 August, BelTA has learned.

Belarus has always been a consistent supporter of industrial cooperation, the head of government said. “That is why we have suggested the Eurasian Electric Bus pilot project to make the best use of integration advantages of our union in addressing import substitution challenges, developing new industries and jobs. I believe that we have chosen a project that will really make the best use of the potential of all the member states, and also that of the observer countries. Of course, it can be followed by any other project that the heads of state and heads of government see fit. The main thing is to start and follow the path. I am sure that the approbation of this pilot project will bring industrial cooperation to a qualitatively different level and help us acquire new competencies,” Roman Golovchenko said.

In his opinion, it is also necessary to determine, including with the help of the Eurasian Electric Bus pilot project, the financial instruments to support industrial cooperation. “The current circumstances require us to act decisively, if we do not want to drag behind global trends, giving everything away to the invisible and unknown hand of the market. We expect that the mechanism of financing cooperative projects and the potential of Eurasian development institutions will work at full capacity in the very near future and will help us proceed to action on the development of EAEU brands and joint production of in-demand high-tech products,” the prime minister stressed.
