MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) – A South African team took part in the Strongest Athletes Swimming Cup in Minsk and gave a thumbs-up to the swimming infrastructure in the Belarusian capital, BelTA has learned.
In Minsk, the South African team won one silver and five bronze medals. Matthew Caldwell became a three-time medalist of the tournament, and Jordan Eaton competed in several finals.
After the world championships, our federation received an invitation to participate in this tournament. The coaches assembled a team of two guys and two girls. I am very pleased with my performance; I have had podium finishes at events in Africa but these are my first medals outside the continent, Matthew Caldwell said. The pool is simply amazing, the best I have ever competed in. There are no facilities like this in South Africa, so it's doubly exciting for us to fly here from the other side of the world. I've only seen arenas this big on television, and now I've had the chance to compete in such fantastic conditions.
I came close to making the top three a couple of times, but fell just a bit short. Nevertheless, I broke several personal bests, which I'm very happy about, Jarden Eaton chimed in. I liked Belarus, even though the weather is colder than back home. But the food here is delicious and the girls are very beautiful. On the first day after we arrived, we were given a city tour to see various historical sites. It was really interesting. We also found some time to take a stroll and see the Christmas trees.
A total of about 500 athletes from 11 countries took part in the Strongest Athletes Swimming Cup in Minsk. Team Belarus won 6 gold, 21 silver, and 27 bronze medals. Team Russia topped the medal count (41-23-9).
