Sabalenka moves to 2026 Australian Open quarterfinal

MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka has won her fourth match at the 2026 Australian Open in Melbourne, BelTA has learned.

In the round of 16, the Belarusian defeated Canada’s world number 16 Victoria Mboko, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), in an hour and 27 minutes. In the quarterfinal, the Belarusian will face World No.27 Iva Jovic of the USA.

In the opener, Aryna Sabalenka defeated France’s world number 118 Tiantsoa Rakotomanga in two sets, 6:4, 6:1. In the second round the world’s top-ranked player defeated China’s world number 702 Zhuoxuan Bai, 6-3, 6-1. In the third round, she beat world number 55 Anastasia Potapova of Austria, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7).

Aryna Sabalenka has won the Australian Open twice in a row (2023, 2024) and last year lost in the final to American Madison Keys.

Belarus’ world number 102 Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who made it to the Australian Open main draw through the qualifiers, lost in the first round to Italy’s world number 7 Jasmine Paolini, 1-6, 2-6.

The tournament at Melbourne Park will be over on 1 February.
