MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) – The best Belarusian tennis players will open the new season at Brisbane International, BelTA has learned.
World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus reached the Brisbane International final last season, losing to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, 0-6, 3-6. Victoria Azarenka, currently ranked 20 in the world, reached the quarterfinal then, losing to Aryna Sabalenka, 2-6, 4-6. Aryna Sabalenka won the tournament in 2023. Victoria Azarenka celebrated the victory twice, in 2009 and 2016. In 2014 Victoria Azarenka lost to Serena Williams of the United States in the final. Belarus’ Aleksandra Sasnovich lost to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the final in 2018. The upcoming event will start on 29 December 2024 and will be over on 5 January 2025.
For the world's leading tennis players, Brisbane International will be the final warm-up event before the Australian Open which will be running in Melbourne on 12-26 January. Belarusian players have won the Australian Open twice each. Aryna Sabalenka won the previous two tournaments, and Victoria Azarenka won the event in 2012 and 2013.
