MINSK, 9 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka went off on a good start at the Italian Open, defeating Russia’s world number 43 Anastasia Potapova, 6-2, 6-2 in the opener, BelTA has learned.
The match lasted for an hour and three minutes. The Belarusian will next play world number 31 Sofia Kenin of the United States. Last year Aryna Sabalenka reached the Italian Open final where she lost to Poland’s Iga Swiatek.
Belarus’ world number 54 Victoria Azarenka is set to take on Poland’s world number 25 Magdalena Frech. Victoria Azarenka reached the Italian Open second round by securing a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Colombia’s world number 55 Camila Osorio in the opener. In 2013 Victoria Azarenka reached the final where she lost to Serena Williams of the United States.
The event in Rome will be over on 17 May. The winner will earn 1,000 points and €877,300.
