
MINSK, 30 September (BelTA) - Belarusian swimmers won five individual medals on the third day of th swimming tournament at the 3rd CIS Games in Azerbaijan, BelTA has learned.
Mikita Lyakh clinched victory in the 50m freestyle by clocking 22.82, finishing more than half a second ahead of his rivals. Earlier this year, Lyakh won gold in the same event at the European Youth Olympic Festival in North Macedonia. Another Belarusian, Aliaksei Tarasenka, finished fourth today, just 0.02 seconds off the podium.
Other leaders of Belarus’ swimming team also made it to the podium. Anastasia Vasilenka placed second in the 50m breaststroke and third in the 100m freestyle. Maksim Malyshka earned a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke and a bronze in the 400m individual medley.
The 3rd CIS Games are underway at 12 venues across seven Azerbaijani cities: Ganja, Yevlakh, Mingachevir, Gabala, Shaki, Goygol, and Khankendi. The tournament, which is running until 8 October, features 1,624 athletes under the age of 23, representing 13 countries: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Türkiye, Cuba, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Oman. Team Belarus includes 241 athletes.
The tournament features football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, sambo, boxing, judo, taekwondo, badminton, table tennis, trampoline gymnastics, archery, rifle and pistol shooting, trap shooting, fencing, wrestling, karate, rowing, kayaking/canoeing, rhythmic gymnastics and chovgan.
