MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes won 36 medals at the CIS Open Cup - World Cup Taekwondo ITF (non-Olympic version) that took place in Minsk, BelTA learnt from the organizers of the event.
Belarus was represented at the tournament by more than 120 taekwondo fighters from Mogilev Oblast and Minsk. Minsk athletes claimed two gold medals in team competitions sparrings.
The three-day tournament featured more than 200 medal events at the Minsk Arena velodrome. The tournament gathered more than 1,000 athletes aged 7 to 39 from 13 countries, which was a record number for the competitions of such level. Competing in the event were athletes from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Finland, and Estonia. Ukraine's Sparta topped the team standings and was followed by Russia's Moskva and Russia's BLACK BELT from Saint Petersburg.
The current tournament was once the Belarus Taekwondo ITF Cup. It has been held since 2006, and initially brought together not more than 300 participants from four countries.
Belarus has fighter both in WTF-Taekwondo (an Olympic sport) and ITF-Taekwondo (not an Olympic sport). The Belarusian organizations specializing in these two types of Taekwondo cooperate among themselves and the athletes try to compete in both sports.
