Belarus third in badminton team event at 3rd CIS Games

MINSK, 1 October (BelTA) - Belarusian athletes have won their first badminton medal at the 3rd CIS Games currently underway in Azerbaijan, BelTA has learned.

The first medalists were determined in the mixed team event, which featured national teams from six countries. The Belarusian squad included Dzmitry Yazotchanka, Aliaksandr Skamarouski, Sviataslau Salagub, Tsimafei Grishakou, Maryia Vazhnik, Anastasia Kichayeva, Maryia Berdnikova, and Daria Kuzmenka. The team matches consisted of two singles and three doubles games.

In the group stage, the Belarusian team started with a loss to Russia (0-5), but then went on to defeat teams from Kazakhstan (3-2) and Azerbaijan (5-0). In the semifinal the Belarusian athletes lost to the team from Uzbekistan, securing the third-place finish.

After six competition days at the 3rd CIS Games, Belarus' medal count stands at 49 (7 gold, 18 silver, and 24 bronze) medals.

The 3rd CIS Games are underway across seven Azerbaijani cities: Ganja, Yevlakh, Mingachevir, Gabala, Shaki, Goygol, and Khankendi. The international event has brought together over 1,600 athletes under the age of 23 from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Türkiye, Cuba, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Oman. The Belarusian delegation includes 241 athletes competing in 21 sport disciplines.

2 October will feature medal events in badminton, swimming, boxing, fencing, and trampoline. Thursday will also feature volleyball matches and the start of the archery competition. The 3rd CIS Games will be over on 8 October.
