MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – Belarusian swimming star Ilya Shymanovich took silver in the 100m Breaststroke at the Strongest Athletes Swimming Cup in Minsk, BelTA has learned.
The final heat featured six Belarusian swimmers and two Russian athletes. World record holder in this discipline Ilya Shymanovich completed the distance in 55.92 seconds, earning second place and finishing just two-tenths of a second behind Russia’s Kirill Prigoda, a multiple world champion in short course swimming. The top three was rounded out by another Russian swimmer, Alexander Zhigalov (57.16).
“I’m really grateful Ilya is competing. This kind of rivalry motivates me and makes it more exciting for the fans. Seeing the other athletes in such great shape also pushes me to go faster,” Kirill Prigoda stated. “The Minsk swimming pool is fantastic, arguably the best facility of its kind in Europe. It’s perfectly suited for hosting world and continental competitions.”
The Strongest Athletes Swimming Cup has brought together approximately 500 athletes from 11 countries in Minsk. The participants include World and European champions, and Olympic finalists. The competitions will continue until 23 November, with a total of 46 medal events in the program.
