What makes a good delegate to Belarusian People’s Congress? Mogilev residents weigh in

MOGILEV, 12 December (BelTA) – On the sidelines of the extraordinary 11th Congress of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, representatives of the Mogilev Regional Trade Union Association spoke with a BelTA correspondent about the essential qualities a delegate to the 7th Belarusian People’s Congress should possess.

The congress was held in the capital city on 12 December, with regional representatives joining via videoconference. The agenda included discussing the draft of the country’s socio-economic development program for the next five years and electing new trade union delegates to replace those who had stepped down. Head of the Belarus President Administration Dmitry Krutoi was nominated as a delegate from the region’s trade union.

Among the participants representing Mogilev was Ivan Trambachev, Chairman of the Mogilev Regional Office of the Belarusian Trade Union of Forestry and Nature Management Workers. He stressed the importance of an open delegate selection process, as it is crucial to know who will represent the interests of people at such a significant national event. “These must be reputable individuals with extensive life and professional experience, who are loyal to Belarus and its people,” he shared. “They must be responsible individuals who can make prompt decisions.”
For Ivan Trambachev, the topic of forestry and the woodworking industry is particularly close, as he has been working in this sector his entire life. Therefore, he would like to see the same comprehensive attention paid to this sector in the upcoming five-year period. “I want to see our forestry and woodworking industry thrive, as its dynamic development is the foundation for jobs, fair wages, and our future prosperity,” he noted.

Lyudmila Starostina chairs the Mogilev Regional Office of the Belarusian Trade Union of Education and Science Workers. According to her, being a delegate is more than just an honor. “A delegate is a leader who can correctly set priorities and explain them, who understands legislation and economics, and is a true patriot of their homeland,” she said. “They are people who know how to listen and hear others, because they represent the interests of a great number of citizens.”
Lyudmila Starostina believes that the path defined by the head of state and supported by the Belarusian people is the right one, as people are at its heart. The development of education, she noted, is a prime example of such state commitment. Both city gymnasiums and rural schools are equipped with the necessary resources to provide excellent conditions not only for learning but also for nurturing children’s talents. “Never before have such significant funds been allocated to education as now. Accessible and high-quality education is essential for our future,” she emphasized. “It is important, while embracing innovation, to preserve and enhance our finest traditions.”

Aleksandr Lisovsky, Chairman of the Mogilev Regional Office of the Belarusian Trade Union of Construction and Building Materials Workers, also attended the extraordinary congress. He believes that a delegate to the Belarusian People’s Congress must be an honest and proactive individual, capable of adequately representing the interests of not only his trade union movement but of the entire Belarusian people.

“The construction industry is one of the flagships of our economy. We are rapidly building housing, educational, cultural, recreational, and many other social facilities. I am confident we will continue in this vein and only strengthen our positions,” he stated.

He added that the Belarusian People’s Congress is a genuinely influential tool of people’s power. “It addresses numerous challenges and sets the course for the entire nation’s future. It discusses not only the economy but absolutely every sphere of life. Our country is not that big, so there are no unimportant areas. We strive to understand everything thoroughly. And the trade unions demonstrate this in their daily work,” he concluded.
