What Lukashenko warned OSCE about in 2017

MINSK, 12 January (BelTA) – The latest episode of the documentary series Time Chose Us by the Belarus 1 TV channel recalled the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's 26th Annual Session that took place in Minsk, BelTA reports.

“I should give a lot of credit to Belarus, the Belarusian parliament for the fact that our country hosted the session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. It was, to some extent, a breakthrough in relations with the West. As far as I remember, about 60 countries participated in it. This was no small feat,” said Vladimir Andreichenko, Chairman of the House of Representatives (2008-2024). “They got to see the real Belarus. I am not going to say that their double standards regarding Belarus changed in any way. But at least they saw that it was a hospitable, clean, neat country that was pushing forward and where people support the president,” the Belarusian statesman added.

Vladimir Andreichenko also drew attention to the remarkable program speech delivered by the Belarusian leader at the OSCE PA session, where Aleksandr Lukashenko suggested restarting the Helsinki process.

“Our Mother Europe has found itself at the crossroads of problems,” said the president of Belarus at the plenary session dedicated to the opening of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's 26th Annual Session.

The head of state remarked that the European security architecture had not experienced such a serious fundamental crisis since the end of the Cold War. The president suggested that the OSCE considered embarking on a new Helsinki process. He added that Belarus was a place where such pressing issues could be resolved.

“We have enough experience to become a starting point for this process, if you want,” assured Aleksandr Lukashenko.

The president of Belarus already saw where the continent was heading and proposed a Helsinki 2 process. That day, parliamentarians from Britain, Finland, France, Canada and Ukraine sought to talk to the Belarusian leader. Back then, European politicians were free to speak their mind. But while they were in Minsk talking about peace, Ukraine continued to be pumped with weapons, pulling the continent into yet another armed conflict.
