BISHKEK, 27 November (BelTA) – Initiatives of the Belarusian president, including those put forward at the recent Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security, are resonating with participants of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) summit in Bishkek, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich told journalists on 27 November, BelTA has learned.

A joint meeting of the CSTO Committee of Secretaries of the Security Councils, the CSTO Defense Ministers Council, and the CSTO Foreign Ministers Council took place in Bishkek ahead of the meeting of the heads of state.

“A lot was said about our international conference, recently held in Minsk, which is really gaining momentum every year. The initiatives of our president, which were put forward at the conference, were well received. This was mentioned, too,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

The state secretary of the Belarusian Security Council told reporters that the CSTO summit’s coordinated decisions include practical steps that were discussed during the Minsk conference.

“These documents create the necessary counterbalance to address the existing threats and thus ensure the security of the entire organization,” Aleksandr Volfovich noted.

According to him, the CSTO addresses a variety of threats around its perimeter and how to confront them together. These include, for example, fighting drug trafficking and illegal migration in the southern direction. On the other hand, Belarus and Russia are particularly concerned about the militarization on the western borders and the buildup of military contingents in neighboring European countries. But all these challenges and threats affect the security of all the CSTO partners in one way or another.

“Only together, through collective efforts, can we counter all threats, repel them, and implement initiatives,” the state secretary of the Belarusian Security Council believes.

Aleksandr Volfovich emphasized that while the West builds up its military potential, the CSTO countries do not expand their armed forces but focus on quality and equipping them with new state-of-the-art weapons and their deployment on their territory. “In particular, the Oreshnik missile system is deployed [in Belarus]. It protects the entire organization from the West. This serves as a counterbalance to the activities that are, unfortunately, being conducted on our western borders in close proximity to our organization,” he said.
