Ukraine’s former PM names lessons to be learned from Belarus

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – In the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov gave his take on how the freedom of speech is understood in Belarus.

During his inauguration speech on 25 March, Aleksandr Lukashenko addressed the people and the international community. In his speech, the Belarusian leader touched on various topics, including the freedom of speech and the freedom of the media in the country. “[Aleksandr Lukashenko] pointed out that the freedom of speech should not be a wrecking ball that destroys the state, and the media should convey accurate and reliable information to people. Without it, it is impossible to run the country. When a smokescreen is created for a leader (I have experienced this myself, so I know what I am talking about), when a leader is told that everything is okay everywhere, how smart and amazing he is, we should assume that things are not going well in the country,” Nikolai Azarov emphasized.

According to the ex-prime minister, when certain flaws are revealed, they are promptly eliminated, conclusions are drawn, personnel decisions are made. “We should learn from the example of Belarus. On the one hand, hard-working people are appreciated here, but on the other hand, if a person is not up to the task, then this person is let go fast,” he added.
