OSHMYANY DISTRICT, 10 November (BelTA) - Truck drivers queuing at the Kamenny Log border checkpoint (Medininkai on the Lithuania side) shared their views on the border situation with a BelTA correspondent.
Valery, a driver for a Lithuanian company, has been queuing since 2 November. “Our turn is more or less coming up. And if they were working normally, we would already be proceeding to the border. Now they are going to move us. What happens next, we don't know,” he said.
“There have always been queues, sometimes really terrible ones. But now it's completely unclear what’s happening. They are working very slowly and it’s just awful,” the man added. “We'll just sit and wait for things to sort out, and whether this will be happen, only God knows.”
Nearby, a group of international drivers are discussing the situation. They are all representatives of Lithuanian carriers. “It's a problem,” one of them said. The others are wondering “What will happen next?”
Anton has been queuing at the border since 3 November. “Some arrived earlier, some later. About a week in total. And it's unknown how much longer we will be standing here,” he said. “We are just sitting in trucks. Even basic daily needs are a problem. It's tough, of course. And on top of that, there is the uncertainty about the border: how much longer will the waiting be?"
In a statement on the border situation, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Lithuanian trucks accumulated on the approaches to the Kamenny Log and Benyakoni checkpoints will be moved to special parking areas near Kotlovka for their safety and security.
In a move to manage freight traffic, Belarus temporarily suspended the exit of all trucks with Lithuanian plates as from 9.00 in the morning on 10 November, the State Border Committee of Belarus informed. The border service is monitoring the situation and remains in a constant state of readiness to respond to any changes.
