Sergeyenko: Belarus-Vietnam cooperation reaches a new qualitative level

MINSK, 3 September (BelTA) - Cooperation between Belarus and Vietnam has reached a new qualitative level, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said in an interview with the Nhan Dan newspaper, reports BELTA.

“Over more than 30 years of diplomatic relations, Belarus and Vietnam have achieved great success in developing bilateral ties. Vietnam is our reliable friend and strategic partner in Southeast Asia. This aligns with our chosen course to jointly and consistently develop mutually beneficial cooperation for the good of the peoples of our two countries. The result of the visit to Minsk by To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, in May this year was the signing of a joint statement on establishing a strategic partnership between our countries. This has brought Vietnamese-Belarusian cooperation to a new qualitative level. It is safe to say that this signing became a new milestone in the history of our two countries' relations,” said Igor Sergeyenko.

According to him, we are witnessing increasingly close cooperation in areas such as defense, security, science, technology, trade, investment, education, personnel training, culture, and sports. “Among the priority areas of interaction, we should highlight the strengthening of business ties, which is facilitated by using the opportunities of the free trade agreement between the EAEU and Vietnam. As far as I know, BelAZ haul trucks are very popular in your country. Belarus is ready to supply this heavy mining equipment for Vietnam's mining industry,” the speaker noted. “We are also working on projects for the assembly production of BELARUS tractors and MAZ machinery in Vietnam. A pilot batch of tractors is planned to be assembled this year or next one. On 3 September, a licensing agreement will be signed in Ho Chi Minh City between Minsk Tractor Works and New Atlantic International Trading Company to establish a joint venture.”

A decision has also been made to intensify interaction in the scientific and technical sector and to hold the next meeting of the joint Belarusian-Vietnamese commission on scientific and technological cooperation in 2025. “There is noticeable progress in strengthening bilateral humanitarian ties. I would like to remind you that a visa waiver has been in effect between our countries since 30 January 2025. Direct air service will be launched starting this October. On 12 October, the airline Belavia will operate its first charter flight to Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. I am confident that our relations will only improve, and the agreements reached will be strictly implemented,” the chairman of the House of Representatives emphaszied.

Belarusian-Vietnamese inter-parliamentary cooperation is characterized by a high dynamism of contacts, the speaker noted. “The regularity of meetings at the leadership level of our parliaments demonstrates the mutual interest of the parties in intensifying cooperation. I would like to underscore that the current meeting is already the third in the past year. The main areas of our work are the exchange of experience in lawmaking, the promotion of joint initiatives, the development of regional ties, and the engagement of people's diplomacy mechanisms to facilitate the implementation of decisions. Speaking about potential directions for the further development of relations between our legislative bodies, I would highlight the preparation for signing an updated cooperation agreement. This will provide our ties with a more systematic foundation and infuse them with new content. The next step will be to develop a cooperation development program for 2026-2028 in order to implement the signed agreement,” Igor Sergeyenko added. “Overall, the fundamental line of parliamentary diplomacy is to strengthen human and humanitarian connections, and to preserve and develop the good traditions of Belarusian-Vietnamese friendship.”

“Belarus and Vietnam are on a path of progressive development and do not tolerate interference in their internal affairs. There are no political disagreements or obstacles to expanding diverse cooperation between us. In the current conditions of economic and informational pressure on sovereign and independent states that pursue an independent policy in the interests of their citizens, trust and mutual understanding between time-tested friends and partners, which undoubtedly include Belarus and Vietnam, are more important than ever. We pay special attention to mutual assistance and solidarity on international platforms, primarily within the framework of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Meetings are regularly held during the sessions of these organizations, where our countries' positions are coordinated, and comprehensive support is provided to initiatives put forward,” the chairman of the House of Representatives said.

Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko arrived on a visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam following the instructions of the president to participate in the ceremonial events marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and Independence Day.
