Ruzhany Palace museum to add artifacts from 16th-17th centuries to its collection

BREST, 27 January (BelTA) - The museum of Sapieha Palace in Ruzhany has drawn over 330,000 tourists from different countries over the past 15 years, director of the museum Yelena Kubarko told BelTA.

The museum has been in operation since 25 January 2011. Initially, visitors could only explore two halls, which housed a small collection of exhibits. “Over the past 15 years, we have expanded our collections significantly. We have gathered more than 4,000 exhibits, organized 90 exhibitions, welcomed over 330,000 visitors, and hosted 120 wedding ceremonies. Currently, we have five halls open: four exhibition halls and one special exhibition hall. Over the past three years, we have significantly revamped the interior of each of them, and we are not stopping here,” Yelena Kubarko said. In 2025, Ruzhany Palace of the Sapieha family drew nearly 45,000 tourists from various regions of Belarus and from foreign countries.

Restoration work continues on the grounds of the palace under archaeological supervision. “During the coordinated efforts of restorers and archaeologists, some very interesting artifacts from the 16th–17th centuries were discovered. These will be added to our collection later this year. They include fragments of tiles with the Sapieha family heraldry, pieces of ceramic tableware, coins, bullets, and other items,” she said.

The restoration of Ruzhany Palace began in 2008. Since then, the central entrance gate has been renovated, and the side wings have been reconstructed, now housing the museum. The restoration of the northeastern arcade has been completed. Exterior work on the two-story Eastern (Theater) Wing has also been finished. Plans are in place to establish a museum space, storage facilities for collections, a multifunctional hall, a hotel, and a café within this wing. Under the Cultural Space program, the restoration of this architectural gem will continue from 2026 to 2030.

“Within this five-year period, all work on the palace grounds must be completed. This includes the conservation and restoration of the fragments of the main building and the arcades, the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Eastern Wing (interior finishing), and the landscaping of the inner ceremonial entrance," Yelena Kubarko said. Funding will come from multiple sources, including local and national budgets.
