Russian actor: Artists bear huge responsibility

MINSK, 15 September (BelTA) – People’s Artist of Russia Vladimir Mashkov spoke about things that always remain relevant in art in the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.

When asked whether the phrase “a poet in Russia is more than a poet” applies to artists, Vladimir Mashkov said “I cannot tell you that an artist in Russia is more than an artist. Or more than a poet. I do not know that. But I know that the people who come out on the stage or come out on the film set and act their part to tell the life of various people bear huge responsibility.”

In his words, it is vital to realize the significance of your work. “You know when I start any work in our theater or at the film set right now the first question I ask is “What for?” What goal is some work of art supposed to achieve? And when we understand the meanings and goals of this task…,” the actor said.

“Students asked one great artist once: “What is more important in art? How or what?” He gave a very quick-witted answer that seems precise to me. He said what and how is not important. It seems to me that the question who makes a work of art and what for is a topical one and remains the most topical today,” Vladimir Mashkov said.
