Pushilin: Lukashenko wanted to prevent conflict in Ukraine from escalating

MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) - In 2014-2015, Belarus made quite serious efforts to ensure that the conflict in Ukraine was resolved, Head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Denis Pushilin said in the documentary "In Search of Peace" aired by the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA learned.

"Being the host, Minsk made serious efforts to ensure that the situation was resolved, that the conflict was settled. Aleksandr Lukashenko was personally involved. He really wanted to prevent the conflict from escalating, which we see happening now," Denis Pushilin emphasized.

He pointed out that the Belarusian president assessed the situation adequately and understood that Ukraine was being used: both covertly and overtly, or through the corrupt government that acted at the behest of third country, not in the interests of the people of Ukraine and especially the people of Donbass.

"Back in the day third countries deemed it expedient to keep this conflict simmering, bide time to prepare and arm and then to bring it to the boiling point at a time convenient for them,” the head of the DPR noted.

In his opinion, if it had not been for the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to launch the special military operation, the situation would have been more critical for the residents of Donbass, Russia and even Belarus.

"The enemy was not planning defensive plans. They were readying for offensive actions judging by forces, means, ammunition, and the number of personnel. In addition to Donbass, they were targeting Crimea. Based on the documents we received from the enemy, they were also planning a strike in the direction of the Republic of Belarus as a diversionary maneuver," Denis Pushilin said.
