Plans to build IT cluster in Brest

BREST, 28 December (BelTA) – There are plans to build an IT cluster near Respubliki Avenue in Brest, BelTA learned from Brest Mayor Alexander Rogachuk on 28 December.

The mayor said: “Together with the architecture department and other agencies we intend to set up kind of an IT cluster in Belarus. It will in no way replace other innovative platforms the city has. We would like to place it near Respubliki Avenue. It is remarkable that IT companies themselves are eager to invest in the construction project.”

Alexander Rogachuk remarked that in 2018 the export of computer services rose by 60% to nearly $15 million. The export of computer services is the third largest revenue-generating kind of export in the city. “It is a very good trend. Brest is absolutely a fitting place for this kind of industry. The head of one such company said that 3 billion people use software made by that company in Brest. It is a very serious area,” stressed the mayor.

In 2018 Brest companies exported $200 million worth of services. International transportation accounted for 70% of the figure. It was followed by civil engineering with $34 million. The export of tourism services – over $3 million – does not grow sufficiently fast. “Taking into account the city's potential the export of services should get a higher priority,” believes Alexander Rogachuk.

Participants of the joint session of the Brest City Council of Deputies and the Brest City Executive Committee discussed the fulfillment of the Brest city social and economic development forecast and the execution of the city budget in 2018 as well as tasks for 2019.
